Today we pay tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He rose to prominence as a Baptist minister who was a key leader in the Civil Rights movement from 1955 up until he was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn. on April 4, 1968. During that time Dr. King led numerous peaceful marches for the right to vote, desegregation, labor rights, and other civil rights. He is best known for being one of the leaders who organized the March on Washington on Aug. 28, 1963, where he gave his famous, “I Have A Dream” Speech. After Dr. King died, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968. On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honor Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush signed a proclamation to serve Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the 3rd Monday in January. However, it wasn’t until Jan. 17, 2000, that all 50 US states paid honor to this great man.
