BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
LENTEN SEASON
Today is the 4th Sunday in the Lenten Season. Lent began on Ash Wednesday and represents the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert as he fasted, prayed, and was tempted by the devil as He prepared himself for His ministry. As Christians, we take this time to give up something. (ie. smoking, gambling, alcohol, lying, cheating, cursing, swearing, snacks, dessert, etc.). As you pray and fast during this time, remember that Jesus Christ made the ultimate when he died on the cross at Calvary for our sins. This week’s Lenten scriptures to read are: I Samuel 16:1-13, Psalm 23, Ephesians 5:8-14, and John 9:1-41
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
March is Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward Together: Women Educating and Inspiring Generations”. Many African American women have played a significant role in educating and inspiring others. Today’s spotlight is on Marva Collins. who was a former educator in Chicago, that was unhappy with the way that children from low level income families were being taught and mislabeled as learning disabled. She created her own teaching methods and started an elementary school called Westside Preparatory School in Chicago’s Garfield Park neighborhood. As the students achieved, the school gained much success. A TV movie has been made of her life called “The Marva Collins Story”.
